100th anniversary logo

As we enter our 100th year of leading special education, the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) is recognizing exceptional educators from around the world who have shown a passion, dedication, and commitment to making a difference in the lives of the students who they teach. Hear from teachers about their personal experiences working in the field, and get inspired to make your own impact this year.

Christina Branson

My name is Christina Branson. I am in my 22nd year of education, 20 being in the classroom and 2 as a Behavior Resource Teacher.

I received my AA from Green River Community College in Auburn, Washington, my BA in Elementary Art Education from Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington, and my master’s degree in Special Education, from California State University, Bakersfield. I hold a Mild/Moderate and Moderate/Severe teaching credential, and a Cross-cultural, Language and Academic Development (CLAD) credential. I have worked with students with Autism, ADHD, Specific Learning Disabilities, OHI, Speech and Language delays, Intellectual Disabilities, TBI, Deaf and hard of hearing, and ED to name a few. I have been an Adjunct Lecturer for California State University – Bakersfield and I am a cooperating teacher for full-time, student teachers, with local Universities.

I love teaching! I love helping students find the best way they can learn and go with it. I encourage all types of learning. I have empathy for my mild/moderate students because I was once one of them. I received special education services in Elementary school but was able to “exit” when I entered Jr. High.

I like to incorporate art, movement, and projects to the standards for a fun learning experience. Currently, my class is in the process of learning about how to conserve water during out California drought by planting a drought tolerant garden that can not only help beautify the school but provide healthy fruits and vegetables to the families of our school who are of low socio-economic status.

I am an advocate for my students to be included in the school community and not just “that class”. I am involved with leadership, motivating others, and recently painting a school wall with the word KINDNESS on it for all to see. It has brightened up the school’s moral.

On a personal note, I have been married for 25 years, have two grown children and two granddaughters. I love to create art, traveling, and cycling.
