Department of Education Releases Resources to Promote Discrimination-Free Schools

Back to School: Supporting Educational Environments Free from Discrimination

As part of the package of materials released or forthcoming in September from the U.S. Department of Education, the Office for Civil Rights has released a new resource, “Back to School: Supporting Educational Environments Free from Discrimination.”

Included are two documents, one targeted to K-12 schools and one for institutions of higher education, designed to support schools as they prepare for and operationalize returns to in-person learning, to ensure they are doing so equitably. The resources review topline information about Title VI, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (IDEA), and more as they relate to K-12 and postsecondary institutions. Additionally, the resources explore how each of those policies relate to emerging and existing issues related to COVID-19 this school year.
